It’s about time Sudan Archives feeds her “Egocentric Soul” — or, extra precisely, that she embraces her pure magnificence. Take heed to the singer-songwriter’s new single, an empowering ode to Black hair, under.
“Egocentric Soul” rumbles with a quiet bass line and Sudan Archives’ signature acrobatic violin. Within the music, the artist, born Brittney Denise Parks, places voice to the fears all Black ladies face as they navigate our Euro-centric society: “If I minimize my hair, hope I develop it lengthy/ Again lengthy, again time like method earlier than/ If I put on it straight will they like me extra?/ Like these women on entrance covers?” Later, she asks, “Am I ok?”
“I really feel like there’s an American normal of what stunning hair is, and I needed to indicate on this video that’s not what all magnificence is; to showcase completely different hairstyles and several types of ladies and their hair,” Sudan Archives defined in a press release. “I used to be impressed by India Arie’s ‘I Am Not My Hair’, one of many first songs I heard about this topic.
